A short term detour from the Landscape/Nursery industry occurred when in 1995 he went to work as the District Director for a United States Congressional Representative from Idaho. After nearly 5 years, he went back to the industry he loved and began a massive expansion of his landscape business.
Mr. Carlton began expanding his Nursery, Landscape and Maintenance business and by 2007, he had grown to one of the largest nursery and landscape business’ in North Idaho. Mr. Carlton’s business’s supplied inventory and installed landscaping over a 100 mile radius from his home in Lewiston Idaho. His business was involved in all facets of the landscape industry. They installed all sizes of plant material, irrigation, outdoor rooms and complete landscape renovations. He started growing his own plant material for his business, including; trees, shrubs, perennials, and grasses. His nursery supplied inventory to landscapers on a wholesale level in addition to his retail business. His company was featured in the Home Improvement show ‘Time to Upgrade’ the program aired on a Northwest CBS affiliate. Their task was to install a landscape in two days. They accomplished the task and were featured on their local television station.
In 2005, he enlisted the help of a financial and business consultant who recommended he hire a general manager. This proved to be one of the best decisions he ever made, together they created the Landscaping Estimator Program that is available today. Through years of research, trial and error, the program evolved into a spreadsheet that has proven time and again to produce estimates that are done fast and accurate.
